The first gemfish samples from the project to understand the biological stock structure of this species in southern Australia have been analysed. DNA sequences from the mitochondrial genome are part of the genetic data that will be used.

Getting into the Guinness Book of Records is a lifetime goal for many. We did it by discovering hybridisation between two species of sharks. The original article can be found here. The lead author Jess Morgan is an MFL associate.
Here is an incredible educational film-clip by fisher Ben Bright demonstrating how to take a fin clip from a small black marlin safely and unassisted. Fin-clips like this are being used for genetic analysis by post-graduate student Sam Williams. Learn more about the Black Marlin project here. The project is a partnership between the Game Fishing Association of […]
University of Queensland PhD student Jenny Giles received a 2013 Sir Keith Murdoch Fellowship from the American Australian Association in New York, US on 4th November 2013 (photo: Malcolm Binks Chairman of AAA and Jenny Giles). Jenny is co-supervised by Cynthia Riginos and Jennifer Ovenden. Jennifer leads the Molecular Fisheries Laboratory. A new paper from […]
During a recent meeting in Adelaide, the Great Australian Bight Research Assessment Group (GABRAG) discussed the western gemfish project and the biology of this species. Those who attended the meeting included (left to right) Ian Knuckey, Jim Raptis, Andy Moore, Jeff Moore, Marcus Finn and Andrew Trappett (photo Jeff Moore).

Dr Andrea Armani from the Fish Lab of the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Pisa (Italy) is developing a genetic method for the identification of species of the gemfish family in the northern hemisphere (in particular Rexea pretiosus and Lepidocybium flavobrunneum). These species are often mislabeled in the marketplace. The genetic multiplex […]
MFL has received the first batch of samples for the gemfish project from Raptis P/L in Adelaide (South Australia). Genetic information from these samples, and many others along the Southern Australian coastline, will provide important new information to ensure sustainable harvesting of this fisheries resource.

The Foundation funds research into marine science. It’s an important source of funds […]
For the Black Marlin project, postgraduate student Sam Williams and Dr. Julian Pepperell (University of Queensland Adjunct Scientist) travelled to the 5th International Billfish Symposium in Taiwan. The symposium was hosted by the University of Taipei and featured many exciting outcomes for both billfish research and fisheries science. Sam presented a poster on his project […]
